Fortunately, the Help Center provides plenty of guides and information to help with most issues, and the software is intuitive enough that this support option will be sufficient for most users. However, some features are noticeably missing, such as project management and budgeting, that are found with paid software options such as QuickBooks Online. The lack of these features brought our score in this category to 3 out of 5 stars.

Benefits of Wave Accounting

At the time of our last review, we noted that Wave “has always been and always will be free,” and that the company planned to maintain this pricing structure following its acquisition by H&R Block. While the free plan still exists, a paid plan is now available. With plans starting at $15 a month, FreshBooks is well-suited for freelancers, solopreneurs, and small-business owners alike. From its add-ons to its support options, there is a lot to discuss when it comes to this provider.

Manage your money like a boss.

QuickBooks Online boasts a robust set of features, including advanced options like project management and inventory features you won’t find with Wave. QuickBooks Online also has hundreds of integrations, connecting your accounting solution with other small business software and apps. On the other hand, QBO only supports up to 25 users on its most expensive plan.

There are several additional Wave products that you can purchase for your business. Wave Payroll has two options starting at $20/month plus format a table $6/month per employee. Tax service payroll is available in 14 states, while self-service payroll is available in the remaining 36 states.

Customizable invoicing

  1. Wave also has some of the most appealing invoices on the market.
  2. Most popular accounting tools have at least a handful of built-in app integrations that make connecting with third-party services as painless as possible.
  3. Fortunately, the Help Center provides plenty of guides and information to help with most issues, and the software is intuitive enough that this support option will be sufficient for most users.

“Sophisticated reports” is a bit of a broad term, but mainly refers to the nitty gritty details of your income and outcome. There is a fourth option, the Select option, where you can customize your plan based on what you want and don’t want, but you aren’t able to get a free trial of a Select plan. Features include quotes and estimates, automatic recurring orders and invoices, 20 different reports, sales tracking, income statements, and purchase orders. The software lacks in the customer service field, and we found the interface to be a bit abrasive when compared to other systems like Wave, but overall, we found the features to be respectable for a cost-free option. Akaunting is one of the more popular free accounting software options, due to it being available in 45 languages.

You’re All Set

If you’re a startup, micro-business or sole proprietor who doesn’t want to invest in accounting software but needs to keep track of your finances, Wave Accounting is a great option. As long as you’re content with basic features and don’t see yourself expanding in the foreseeable future, you’ll find this completely free, easy-to-use software particularly appealing. Since you don’t have to pay anything to get started, it’s certainly worth trying out.

If you’re a freelancer or other solo service provider, Wave is a better option. With Wave, you’ll be able to send unlimited, customized invoices to your customers, manage an unlimited number of expenses and track unlimited receipts through its receipt scanning and capture feature. NerdWallet’s accounting software ratings favor products that are easy to use, reasonably priced, have a robust feature set and can grow with your business. The best accounting software received top marks when evaluated across 10 categories and more than 30 subcategories.

Switch between automatic and manual billing whenever you want. When rating accounting and invoicing software, we use a 47-point rubric that looks at pricing, ease of use, features, customer service, and user reviews. We weigh each section differently to calculate the total star rating.

Wave understands this more than anyone, offering its users a broad range of accounts receivable features, scoring a perfect 10/10 in the category. Although accounting and invoicing are separated into two different product sections on the Wave website (shown similarly below), they don’t require separate accounts. These solutions are integrated within your dashboard and you’ll access them both through your single Wave login. Can manage multiple businesses for free under one account; lacks project tracking tools, industry-specific reports and transaction tracking tags. This may influence which products we review and write about (and where those products appear on the site), but it in no way affects our recommendations or advice, which are grounded in thousands of hours of research.

However, its budget management tools are reserved for its pricier tiers, making it less appropriate for budget-conscious businesses. What’s more, Wave doesn’t let users create cash flow projections, or any budget forecasting tools at that, making the software less suited to larger businesses that require an advanced overview of their finances. If you’re looking for a reliable tool to track your financial transactions, Wave’s bookkeeping features will definitely cut the mustard.

You’ll get unlimited expensing, income tracking, users, and customizable invoices. You also make unlimited bank and credit card connections, and can set up automated follow-up messages for unpaid invoices. You’ll also get access to reports on topics from overdue invoices and bills to profit and loss summaries. Finally, the dynamic dashboard will ensure that you can spot any new trends quickly. Make it easy and convenient for your clients to pay by offering options like bank transfers, credit cards, and online payments. And even better, get rid of late payments with Wave’s Pro Plan features like automated reminders and recurring invoices.

Wave and Xero also have some crucial, unique features in common, such as unlimited users, unlimited bank connections and optional invoice-based payment acceptance. Higher-tier QuickBooks Online plans include bill tracking, project profitability data, inventory management, employee expense tracking and more. Most popular accounting tools have at least a handful of built-in app integrations that make connecting with third-party services as painless as possible. For instance, Xero and FreshBooks’ native Gusto integrations ensure the accounting and payroll software sync with each other problem-free. Wave Accounting imposes fewer limits than most of its competitors on everything from users to vendors. For instance, Xero’s cheapest plan limits users to sending 20 invoices a month, while FreshBooks’ cheapest plan limits users to invoicing only five clients a month.

You can also customize your chart of accounts (CoA) to include only the accounts you need—useful for freelancers, who tend to have fewer expense and income categories on their books than bigger businesses. Before you commit to accounting software, it’s in your best interest to shop around and compare all your options. Unlike QuickBooks and FreshBooks, Wave Accounting is completely free to use. It can allow you to manage all your accounting processes without paying a dime. It’s also intuitive so you don’t need to be an accountant to use it successfully.

However, if you’re after advanced features, like budgeting, projection, and stock management, you’d be better off with FreshBooks or Xero, as these are not offered with Wave. If you’re a small business owner in search of free, cloud-based accounting software, Wave Accounting is worth considering. This is particularly true if you don’t have much accounting experience and would like an easy-to-use, fully functional tool.
